“You cannot paint white on white or black on black. Everyone needs the other in order to be seen." - Manu Dibango
Born on a farm in New Zealand in 1976, Gabrielle began exhibiting at the age of 16. She has since exhibited in Japan, New Zealand, UK, Bahamas, and Hong Kong, and Australia where she now resides.
In 2004-2005, Gabrielle lived and worked with the Hamer tribe of Winyarki village in Southern Ethiopia under the guidance of National Geographic Field Producer, Stuart Macleod. Gabrielle fully immersed herself in tribal life to explore the quintessence of African culture, and documenting her experience with paintings, often using the tribes' body painting clays as pigment in her work.
In 2007 Gabrielle returned to Africa with Stuart Macleod to document the Great Annual Wilderbeast Migration in Southern Kenya, and once again, lived amongst a tribe at the foot of Mount Kilamonjaro, a Maasai tribe, 'Semaito Boma'.
Gabrielle also spent time teaching AIDS orphans how to paint in Kibera, Africas' largest slum as part of a Australian run charity, Oasis Africa-Australia
Details on Gabrielle’s current exhibitions and work can be found on her website.
